This is a continuation to our earlier post “Buying yourself a watch? What to consider – Part 1“. If you like most people still choose to wear a watch and are looking to buy one, you have to determine what you want as wristwatches have a variety of options, e.g:

  • Do you want a traditional watch brand or a fashion brand (Police, Guess, Cerruti 1881)?
  • Do you just want something that is pragmatic (tells the time, decent enough and one which no one will look down on) or do you want to make a statement?
  • What functions do you want in your watch? Two hands, three hands, multifunction, chronograph, multi-time zones e.t.c.
  • Do you want an everyday watch or a dress watch
  • Of course the most important question… how much do you want to spend

Below are some tips to help in your decision making:

Do you want a traditional watch brand or a fashion brand (Police, Guess, Cerruti 1881)?

A traditional watch brand is a watch brand whose business from the inception was watch production. These companies usually older will have their watches manufactured in house resulting in better quality control.

A fashion brand on the other hand will most of the time be produced by a third party with a license from another company whose business from inception wasn’t watch production. The Guess brand for instance started business as a fashion brand. Police started out manufacturing sunglasses. With their brand names having attained a level of international recognition over the years, they issue licenses to third party companies to manufacture and most of the time distribute in their name.

Is one better than the other? Not necessarily. Generally speaking though the fashion brands are usually cheaper.

Do you just want something that is pragmatic (tells the time, decent enough and one which no one will look down on) or do you want to make a statement?

This of course will be largely dependent on a budget. If however you are looking to break te bank, then make sure you purchase from an authorised dealer to ensure you are getting the original.

What functions do you want in your watch?

Two hands, three hands, multifunction, chronograph, multi-time zones etc.?

  • Two Hands – Hour and Minute hands
  • Three hands – Hour, Minute and Second hands
  • Multifunction – usually will have smaller dials on the main dial showing day, date and sometimes month
  • Chronograph – Basically speaking this is an analogue watch that has a stopwatch function. Will definitely have the smaller dials on the main watch dial, the dials reading the seconds and sub-seconds.
  • Multi-time zone – A watch that is able to tell the time in at least to time zones at the same time

Do you want an everyday watch or a dress watch?

Either will tell you the time, but generally watches with a level of bling and above shouldn’t be used as everyday watches and especially should not be worn formally

Of course, the most important question… how much do you want to spend?

It is always better to have decided on this or at least to have an idea before starting your survey. No matter what your budget is, you will always find something you like that is more expensive and when you haven’t decided, if care is not taken, you could end up spending more than is reasonable.

For information on this, please read our article on "How Much Should You Spend on a Watch?"

You need to have in mind though that some options will make your watch more expensive, e.g.

  • The same watch model in Automatic/mechanical will always be more expensive than its quartz counterpart;
  • Swiss Made watches will generally be more expensive than Japan Movement watches.
  • Watches with Sapphire crystal will usually be more expensive than watches with mineral crystal

Conclusion: Decide on the must haves and the options and go for it. Most importantly though have a budget.
